SUZANNE TANNER

Landlady Anna Madrigal (Olympia Dukakis, seated) and her tenants pursue their dreams from a TV station to Castro Street in PBS' adaptation of the first Tales novel.

PBS airs Maupin classic

by David Skeens

On January 10, American Playhouse will begin to air Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City. WVIZ Channel 25 will carry it Monday-Wednesday, January 10-12, from 9 to 11 pm each night. WNEO/WEAO Channels 45 and 49 are airing it for three consecutive Wednesday nights, January 12, 19 and 26, from 10 pm to midnight.

The six-hour miniseries was filmed in conjunction with Channel Four Television in England, where the production aired in September and received encouraging reviews.

Tales is the first of six books Maupin wrote in the series of the same name. Set in 1976, it describes the day-to-day events of the inhabitants of an unusual apartment building in San Francisco.

Academy Award-winner Olympia Dukakis stars as the eccentric and nurturing twist into and out of each other's lives landlady, Anna Madrigal, whose tenants creating plots which are both touching and hilarious.

According to the American Playhouse press release, the miniseries is able to capture the whimsically episodic nature of Maupin's stories, which read as quirky soapoperas of popular culture.

Although British-made, Tales was filmed almost entirely on location in San Francisco in an attempt to catch the flavor of the city which Maupin portrays so adeptly in his novel.

Also, Maupin makes a guest appearance in the film, as does filmmaker Paul Bartel and fashion designer Bob Mackie.

LAWYERS THAT CARE

"Jim Brown and Marcia Margolius handled my claim as if I was the most important client they had. They were not only my lawyers but my friends." G.I.

"Without Marcia Margolius I would have never won my claim for SSI. Now I get some money every month and my medical bills paid." R.P.

"I didn't know that you could get Social Security and Workers' Compensation at the same time until I retained Brown and Margolius. With Comp and Social Security I had coverage for all of my medical bills." B.B.

"When it comes to disability benefits, no one can get you every penny you deserve better than Marcia Margolius and Jim Brown." J.S.

"When Jim Brown won my Workers' Compensation claim all of my medical bills were paid, I was compensated for my time off work and I even received money after I returned to work." LP.

If you or your friends have Social Security or Workers' Compensation questions, have them call the people with the answers.

THEATER SPOTS

by Barry Daniels

Upcoming at the Cleveland Public Theatre is Ma, the newest work by the Judy Dworin Performance Ensemble. Hartford Courant dance critic Tony Angarano called the piece "a provocative dance drama that explores the primal, regenerative power of women. Presenting ancient ritual from a contemporary perspective, Dworin has created a timely commentary on the meaning of feminism." Ma was developed during a year of research in which Dworin travelled to Taiwan, South Korea and Malta and studied shaman rituals. The production uses masks by Leslie Weinberg and sculpture by Mary Barringer. The score was developed from improvisations by Cleveland harpist Jocelyn Chang and flutist-composer Michael
